Now safe to cross that dangerous Wrightson Rd

THE EDITOR: I worked at the Port of Spain International Waterfront Centre for some time. I remember one evening I was crossing Wrightson Road heading over to the Brian Lara Promenade with a friend. We were in a group of other pedestrians.

As we were making our way, we saw a car approaching and speeding up but we expected that it would eventually slow down. That did not happen.

The woman driving the car kept going until I felt the compulsion to pull my now endangered friend back on to the curb. I feared she was going to be hit.

The most surprising thing was that the driver showed little or no concern for her dangerous drive. I yelled at her to watch where she was going but her attitude made it clear she would have probably sped off if she had hit anyone that day.

Since the Government’s Programme for Upgrading Roads Efficiency Unit started building the new pedestrian overpass by the Water Taxi Terminal, my mind goes back to that day every time I pass there. I could have lost a really good friend right in front of my eyes.

That is why I am glad that the overpass is now functional and people needing to cross that busy area don’t have to put themselves in danger from distracted and uncaring drivers.

Also, the overpass is a very attractive and modern-looking structure. It is different from other pedestrian crossings in Trinidad. It is even outfitted with an elevator. I look forward to seeing more pedestrian structures like this built in other busy areas of Port of Spain.
