The Tobago House of Assembly has (THA) decided to reduce the number of activities to celebrate Tobago Day’s 40th anniversary. Tobago Day is celebrated on December 4 and is seen as a special day for all Tobagonians. Originally called Assembly Day, Tobago Day marks the formation of the current version of the assembly.

Celebrations usually begin on December 1 and run until December 8. Activities include a triathlon, award ceremony, youth debate, thanksgiving service and ends with an exposition and closing ceremony. THA communications specialist Avian Parks told Newsday on Wednesday a thanksgiving service, followed by the Tobago Youth Assembly inauguration and youth debate are the only events that will be hosted this year. The thanksgiving will be hosted on Friday at the Shaw Park Complex from 10 am. The inauguration of the Tobago Youth Assembly of 12 members will start at 1 pm on Friday at the Tobago Legislature Chamber. This will be followed by a youth debate from 1.30 pm. Chief Secretary Ancil Dennis spoke of the significance of Tobago Day, “It’s a day we all take to reflect and celebrate the achievements of the assembly, unfortunately, there will be no awards this year due to the situation that we currently face. But in spite of that, we will find suitable ways to celebrate our achievements as Tobagonians and as an Assembly in our many different areas of impact.“In addition to that, I will formally address the people of Tobago and the country by extension on Tobago Day 2020. That address will be aired live on national TV.”
