Police are searching for gunmen who shot and killed a man from Golconda Settlement, San Fernando, on Sunday near his home.

Dead is Akoo Wilson, who police said worked as a cashier at King Capital car rental.

Wilson was walking at the roadside near Golconda Recreation Ground at 8.24 am on Sunday when a white Y12 AD wagon slowed down next to him and two gunmen got out.

They fired several shots at Wilson who was wounded and fell to the ground. The gunmen got back in the car and the driver sped off.

People took Wilson to the San Fernando General Hospital in a white Toyota Aqua. He was pronounced dead shortly after he arrived.

PCs Goolcharan and Soogrim and WPC Charles and other police from the Southern Division and Homicide Bureau Region III visited the scene.

Police also obtained CCTV footage of the killing. The footage shows that Wilson collapsed within a few seconds and did not get a chance to run off. Investigators believe that the killers may have used a false registration number on the getaway car. Police later found an abandoned car fitting the description of the getaway car in an open area off Cipero Road, San Fernando.

Up to Sunday afternoon, police were still trying to ascertain its owner.

Newsday visited Wilson’s home, but relatives declined to speak with the media.

An autopsy is scheduled for this week at the Forensic Sciences Centre at St James.

One resident said a "small party" on Saturday night in the area continued until daybreak.

"I was home when I heard the noise (gunshots), but I thought it was fireworks or firecrackers from the party," a man said.

"By the time I heard about the killing and came down to see, the police were already here, and they had blocked off the area. I have no information on the killing."

Newsday learned that less than three years ago, in January 2018, Akeemie Wilson, 30, a close male relative of Wilson's was gunned down at Pleasantville. Akeemie, of Golconda, and his friend Jahmie Donaldson, 26, were cutting grass at Donaldson’s home at Elm Street, when gunmen opened fire, killing both at the scene. Investigators later found over 20 spent shells.

Police were unable to say if both killings were connected.
