SOUTH taxi drivers will now be able to experience some relief as both ends of the San Fernando/Point Fortin highway by the Mosquito Creek are now open for public use.

Last October, a temporary section of the road was opened. Drivers had complained there was no shoulder, and that section still does not have one.

For months, there has been heavy traffic daily on the southbound lane just after Paria Suites as there was a bottleneck leading to a section of the old road.

But on Tuesday, the geofoam bridge being built to connect these two sections of the roadway was completed and the bottleneck was eliminated. The new section has shoulders.

Drivers and commuters took to social media to share their relief as they would no longer have to worry about seawater reaching the new, evelated roadway.

They were pleased they were "finally above the water," but still hopeful the project can soon be completed.

The route for this project was proposed in 2010, and the Point Fortin and Rousillac sections were expected to be completed by 2016. Both remain unfinished.
