A Diego Martin salesman was arrested and charged on Monday after he stole a quantity of cash from his employers, then claimed he was robbed.

Police said the man, who is from Cuthbert Street Extension, Four Roads, told police that he was robbed by bandits in Auzonville Road, Tunapuna, on Friday afternoon.

He told police the bandits stole the company's gold Fiat panel van, $10,000 cash from the day's sales and other items.

Over the weekend investigators from the Northern and Central Divisions searched several areas for the van, which they eventually found in Cunupia.

They also questioned the man, who admitted that he made up the story and stole the cash.

Police searched him and found $7,500 hidden in his socks, which they believed to be from the original cash reported stolen.

He was charged with embezzlement and wasteful employment of police time.
