THE Senate will not sit on Tuesday after the House of Representatives last Friday failed to pass the Anti-Gang Bill 2020 due to the Opposition's abstention. As such, the Senate now has no need to sit to debate that legislation, parliamentary sources told Newsday on Monday.

The bill needed a special majority to be passed, as it breached certain civil rights under the TT Constitution. Meanwhile on Friday in the House, Barataria/San Juan MP Saddam Hosein will condemn Government’s handling of crime in a private motion.

His motion alleges, “The Government has failed in its management of the organs responsible for intelligence, under-resourced the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution and cut the budget of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service which led to low detection and conviction rates.”

Hosein will highlight thousands of citizens plus businesses have been negatively affected by the high level of crime. The motion concludes, “And whereas as a result of the covid19 lockdown, there has been an increase in the number of cases of domestic violence, be it resolved that this House condemn the Government for its failure to effectively address the unacceptable and serious crime level affecting law-abiding citizens.”
