An early-morning shooting outside the Golden Grove Prison in Arouca on Monday led to its being locked down.

Police said guards on duty at around 4.10 am reported hearing gunshots from the western side and saw a man running along the outside of the fence.

Prison officers and police chased the man, but he escaped.

The entire prison was put under lockdown and a headcount of the prisoners was done.

Newsday contacted Prisons Commissioner Dennis Pulchan, who said there were no breaches in security and all inmates were accounted for.
