Pan contest for women only

THE Steelpan Authority Woman and Steelpan Authority Music will stage an all-female pannists virtual music showcase titled Girl Power, Diamonds. The event will feature contestants performing virtually and vying for prizes in four categories: soloist, duet, trio and quartet from November 20-December 20.

In a media release, executive producer Sean Nero said the event is aiming to give female pannists "the spotlight they genuinely deserve."

He said, "The Steelpan Authority Woman and Steelpan Authority Music are offering a creative window to celebrate the national musical instrument of TT, globally and simultaneously the women who epitomise its beauty.”

Girl Power, Diamonds, he said, is more than just a competition, as the presentation will serve to ensure the mental and all-round well-being of the artistes.

“The event is designed not merely to showcase, but to also uplift women in music, finally recognising them as the creative heroes that they are. The world might be on lockdown, but the beauty of the steelpan shall rise above the restrictions, as the best and brightest exponents of the steelpan artform step forward.”

A three-member panel of music adjudicators will judge the pannists who will be performing to tracks and improvising. Contestants will be required to play a new tune of choice when they advance from the preliminary to semi-final and final round.

While soloists will have four minutes in the spotlight, duets, trios and quartets, will get a five-minute time slot.

As a result of the restrictions brought on by the covid19 pandemic, many artistes have been unable to perform and generate sustainable earnings. Nero said the performing arts world has been thrust into a digital space, and one of the advantages is that this presentation will have a wider audience reach.

“It is therefore practical to allow these gifted entertainers another legitimate opportunity to earn and entertain simultaneously, thereby restoring their resolve at this most difficult time. Within the context of the global theme, this initiative will ensure that the steelpan maintains its position as a global musical force, by providing an accessible platform for future generations across borders,” the release said.
