OROPOUCHE East MP Dr Roodal Moonilal is calling on the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) to have a heart and not evict home owners in arrears.

“The Keith Rowley Government is being heartless in instructing the HDC to evict struggling homeowners during a pandemic,” Moonilal a former Minister of Housing and Urban Development said in a statement on Tuesday.

He said while thousands are enduring great hardship, the HDC has mounted an intense campaign to kick out its clients from their homes. He said several people have received letters from the HDC which is threatening to initiate the appropriate legal recovery action against the homeowner.

“This callousness is evident while most of the economy remains closed as a result of the covid19 pandemic, and many people are having difficulties in meeting their bills and putting food on the table.

“I call upon the HDC to have a heart, especially during this dire period of national suffering. I also ask Housing Minister Penelope Beckles to instruct the Corporation to issue a suitable moratorium to its financially-strapped clients.”

With respect to reports that applicants to HDC have lost money to fraudsters, he said the Corporation should immediately lodge a formal report with the Cyber-Crime Unit of the police service.
