Counselling services and psychosocial support are available to the public through the Ministry of Social Development and Family Services.

In a statement issued on Monday, the ministry said its National Family Services Division (NFSD) division, which aims to promote healthy and functioning families, will continue to provide psychological support for those affected by the covid19 virus.

Psychosocial support refers to the impact of social factors on a person’s mind and behaviour.

The ministry said following the announcements by the Prime Minister on Saturday permitting the reopening of several public spaces, including places of worship and beaches, the public must continue to be vigilant in complying with health and safety regulations.

NFSD assistant director Kathleen Sarkar said, “While the pandemic has encouraged families to spend more time together, it has also made room for quite a number of negatives to seep in, as the covid19 experience has somewhat exacerbated the situation.”

NFSD co-ordinator Sharon Winchester added that issues such as depression, anxiety and in extreme cases, suicidal thoughts may be amplified during this time, given new and existing problems families are facing.

“Such problems include but are not limited to loss of income, reduced income and in some instances, adjustments in family and work routines which are negatively impacting marriages and other familial relations.”

Support is being provided through all of the ministry’s social welfare offices throughout TT, said the release. Talk (over the phone) therapy is being used as the initial intervention method and those requiring referrals can connect to the relevant agencies.

The ministry said it will also host virtual sessions to “aid in lessening the mental and emotional impacts which the pandemic has caused.”

Topics will include parenting tips and online workshops targeting men.

Sarkar said she was pleased with the turnout of men for a recent session.

“Although they appeared particularly quiet in the early part, by the end of it, they were fully interactive and left feeling more comfortable in voicing their opinions and getting themselves heard.”

The ministry said the NFSD plans to host more support sessions in the coming six months, during the Christmas and Carnival period.

Those in need of these services are asked to contact the NFSD at 623-2608 ext 6701-7.
