Man, 49, on 5 sex charges against daughter

After learning about a police investigation against him involving sexual offences, a 49-year-old man drank a combination of a pesticide, power steering and brake fluids in an attempt to take his own life.

On Monday, the day after he was discharged from hospital, police charged him with five counts of sexual penetration of his 16-year-old daughter.

The man is expected to appear virtually before a Point Fortin magistrate on Tuesday, a release from police said.

The release said the girl reported that sher father had subjected her to years of sexual abuse. She told investigators he last assaulted her at around 7.30 am on October 19 at the family’s home.

WPC Myers, of the South-Western Division Child Protection Unit, took the lead in the case, during which she discovered that the father had allegedly been abusing the daughter since she was 11.

On learning of the police report on Saturday, the man reportedly drank malathion mixed with power steering and brake fluids.

He was taken to the Point Fortin Area Hospital, then transferred to the San Fernando General Hospital where he was treated and the hospital’s psychiatrist saw him.

On Sunday, after doctors discharged him, police took him into custody.

On Monday, WPC Myers formally charged him with the five offences.
