Good time to repair, repave our bad roads

THE EDITOR: I endorse Lynette Joseph’s letter – we have too many cars on the roads and way too many potholes.

We have car cemeteries all over Trinidad, wrecked cars on the compounds of police stations and many ministries taking up good real estate space. There are derelict cars in every nook and cranny, with snakes and pests living in them. Our regional authorities cannot keep up with the wrecks all over the country.

Then we have the problem of mechanics and so-called mechanics using narrow roads as extensions of their businesses, making it impossible for vehicles to pass in opposite directions safely. No authority appears to see this as a problem. We have more cars than roads. Yes, we love cars and what a price we pay.

And cars are comfortably being driven on roads full of potholes. Elections come and go but the potholes remain. Everyday in the newspapers there are ads for luxury cars for sale to drive over all these potholes. Are we all so happy driving on obstacle courses in the North, South, East and West? How much longer can we take this?

We are not seeing road works being done. This is a good time to give people jobs to work on the roads. Social distancing should not be a problem if done well, with all the protocols in place. With students working from home now is a good time to repair and repave all the roadways, using the pitch from our Pitch Lake. Make us feel good about something – at least to drive on our roadways.

Please fix the roads. Please install the right signs. Please paint the white lines on the roads which help drivers stay in lane. Enough is enough. Somebody, please do something!
