Burglar shot by police in San Fernando home invasion dies

THE burglar who was shot after he broke into the house of a senior policeman has died at the San Fernando General Hospital.

The man has been identified as Michael Burnette, 31, of La Romaine. Police said the bullet had severely damaged his internal organs.

Burnette had emergency surgery and had been warded at the Intensive Care Unit at the hospital for the last three days. He died on Tuesday morning.

A police report said on October 24 at about 10.30 pm Burnette and three accomplices – who were armed with guns and knives – broke into the Union Hall, San Fernando home of the Special Reserve Police sergeant.

He and the three other men announced a hold-up and made the policeman and his family lie on the floorin the living room.

One of the gunmen dragged the policeman to the bedroom and demanded he open a safe.

When he refused, the gunmen threatened to shoot one of the policeman’s family.

The policeman managed to get to another room, grab his gun and fire several shots at the intruders.

Burnette was shot and his accomplices ran away.
