Fire officials, on Thursday, came to the rescue of a eucalyptus tree at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Port of Spain after it was set on fire.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, Friends of the Botanic Gardens said the Eucalyptus Tereteticornis was planted in 1910.

Several users expressed their anger in the comment section, with many asking if the suspects were caught and charged.

But the page replied, “Yes, they were caught but they are minors.”

One user said, “Now, what kind of sick mind would do this? I hope that the culprit is found and given some community service.

“I wish to suggest that the person is made to plant 100 trees and to walk around the savannah for 100 consecutive days with signs educating the public about 100 species that can be found growing around the savannah and in the Botanic Gardens.”

Another said, “I don’t know what get from destruction. This is such a stupid thing to do.”

Some suggested the parents of the minors be “held accountable” for the act.

The page did not indicate how many minors were involved.
