Okira Holder, 26, a labourer of Dennette Trace, Mason Hall was sentenced to 42 months' hard labour after pleading guilty to possession of an illegal gun and ammunition. Holder appeared before a Scarborough virtual court on Wednesday to answer the charge.

Holder and two other men were arrested and charged after police found the illegal weapon and ammunition in a car they were in.

The court heard that PC Phillip and PC Lakhan, who are attached to the Emergency Response Unit, were on mobile patrol in Union Village when they stopped and searched a car in which Holder, Joel Seaforth, 22, and Kylon Thompson, 26, were in. They found one revolver and three live rounds of .38 ammunition in the vehicle.

Holder, who has a conviction for a similar offence, informed the court he had the firearm for his protection.

Thompson, who appeared before the court three weeks ago for allegedly maliciously damaging a police vehicle, was denied bail. Seaforth was granted bail with surety in the sum of $75,000 and will reappear in court on November 17.

PC Dennis of the Criminal Investigations Department laid the charges.
