Cops: No lackadaisical response to DSS robbery
Senior police in the Northern Division have vowed to investigate the theft of $325,000 in cash from a book keeper for the "Drugs Sou-Sou" (DSS) scheme like any other theft.
Meanwhile there is a larger ongoing enquiry into the legality of the scheme.
Speaking with Newsday on Friday, police confirmed a DSS employee had reportedly been robbed on Thursday afternoon.
They said there would be a professional investigation.
A police source commented, "Money in itself is not illegal. The same level of intensity we will give to anyone else who is the victim of a robbery is the same same level of intensity will be given to this particular case.
"Other things may be considered, but it's not a case where, because of how the money was obtained, the police would have a lackadaisical approach in relation to the enquiry. It will be a professionally done investigation."
Police said if there is doubt whether the cash was obtained legally a separate enquiry will be launched.
On Thursday the 31-year-old bookkeeper and nurse were leaving Trincity Mall at around 6.30 pm with her brother when they were confronted by a man who snatched a duffle bag containing the cash.
After a struggle, the man ran away with the cash, got into a car and drove off.
