RETRENCHED Petrotrin workers will be receiving 2,500 residential lots, reported Housing Minister Pennelope Beckles.

She was speaking Tuesday as the Standing Finance Committee examined the details of the budget allocation for the Housing and Urban Development Ministry.

Oropouche East MP Dr Roodal Moonilal asked about a line item for $20 million, and Beckles replied this was for a project to provide residential lots for retrenched Petrotrin workers (following the closure of the refinery in November 2018). She explained the areas where the residential lots will be constructed include La Romaine, Felicity and Chaguanas. Moonilal asked if the lands had been developed by the Land Settlement Agency for the land for the landless programme, and Beckles replied that the lands had not yet been developed.

Couva South MP Rudranath Indarsingh said he hoped Government was not using sites that had been designated for former Caroni 1975 Ltd workers and giving it to former Petrotrin workers. Beckles replied that it was not the same sites.
