PSC seeks deputy CoPs

THE Police Service Commission (PSC) is seeking qualified TT nationals to fill the offices of deputy commissioners of police (CoP). A TT national is a citizen of TT “or anyone entitled to such citizenship.”

In a newspaper advertisement, the PSC said a deputy CoP helps the CoP in charting the strategic direction of the police. The CoP directs his deputies in respect of various duties. Deputy CoPs are required to exercise initiative, innovativeness, discretion and independent judgement in the performance of their duties.

The duties of a deputy CoP, the commission continued, must perform their duties in accordance with existing principles, policies and legislation.

Applicants need a master degree from a recognised university in law, criminal justice, criminology, criminology, police service management or any other relevant degree. They must also have no less than ten years experience of increasing responsibility in law enforcement.

Interested applicants must submit their applications online on or before October 29 at 4 pm.

In November 2018, the House of Representatives approved a motion to approve the PSC’s nomination of Gary Griffith as CoP. In April 2011, a similar motion was passed in the House to approve Cecil Richardson as a deputy CoP in April 2011. On June 25, 2010, the House approved a motion to nominate Canadian national Jack Ewatski as a deputy CoP.

Maurice Piggott’s and Stephen Williams’ respective nominations by the PSC to be appointed a deputy CoP, were approved on the same day. Canadian Dwayne Gibbs’ nomination by the PSC to be CoP was approved by motion in the House on July 2, 2010. Williams later succeeded Gibbs as CoP, after Gibbs resigned in July 2012
