Works and Transport Minister Rohan Sinanan has condemned the arson attack at the Bamboo pump site, Valsayn as "grossly irresponsible and unpatriotic."

Investigations by the fire service showed the fire was deliberately set.

A media release from the Ministry of Works and Transport on Monday said the fire damaged the structural integrity of the building, including the electrical pump, intake and fuel lines, amounting to an estimated $300,000 to $500,000.

The release said Sinanan visited the site, where he raised his concerns over the incident and condemned the perpetrators.

"A large percentage of the area including a significant number of residents, businesses and farmers are now at risk of flooding due the irresponsible actions of a few.

"The ministry is now forced to take equipment from other sites to supplement this shortfall at Bamboo no 1, placing other communities at risk."

The ministry's resources, he said, would be better spent not having to deal with acts of vandalism.

As a short-term solution, emergency mobile units will be sent to the area to help with flood mitigation while repairs are being done.

Sinanan said there would be a full investigation.
