RESIDENTS of Grants Road, Rousillac, continued their protest on Monday over bad roads and drainage in their area.

One resident, who identified himself as Devin, said residents came out and blocked the road.

He said this was the second protest and residents are concerned that nothing is being done to address their problems. He said they will continue to protest, although police and firemen came and cleared the debris which residents put in the road.

"This is not a violent community."

Devin also said the protest is not political either.

"The people are just fed up."

Last week residents blocked parts of the road, where there were large potholes, with logs, tyres, old appliances and other debris.

UNC Otaheite/Rousillac councillor Javed Mohammed empathised with the residents. He said they felt slighted after seeing a press release from the Works and Transport Ministry which said work would start on Monday.

"Sadly, nothing was done to date."

Mohammed said the contractor arrived on site with some machinery and materials, only to realise the scope of the works was larger than expected.

"The residents' action today is a clear indication that they have reached their wits' end and vow to continue protest action until something is done. They are not prepared to accept empty promises again."

Last Friday, La Brea MP and Labour Minister La Brea Stephen McClashie said he was hoping to meet with the residents to discuss their situation.

“Yes, I am aware of the protest and the conditions of the road. We are working in concert with the Ministry of Works and the Siparia Regional Corporation to rectify the conditions in the shortest possible time.”

In a statement last Thursday, the Works and Transport Ministry said Grants Road is a secondary road that is being used extensively by cars, trucks and other heavy equipment while work is being done on the Solomon Hochoy Highway extension.

Work on Grants Road was supposed to start last week, it said, but had to be pushed back because of rainy weather.
