Personal hotspots for 45,000 students in rural areas

Minister of Finance Colm Imbert said the government will distribute personal hotspot devices, using 3G and 4G mobile phone network, to be shared among mobile devices such as smart phones, laptops and tablets.

He was speaking during the budget presentation for the fiscal year 2021 in the House of Representatives.

The initiative, named Internet MyFi for students, will provide 45,000 devices.

“This facility is primarily for students who do not have internet access in their homes or surrounding areas,” said Imbert.

He also said existing internet cafés and WiFi hot spots will also be supported in all areas of the country, specifically targeting students in remote areas.

These measures will come into effect the first quarter of fiscal 2021.
