NCRHA awaits report on escape at EWMSC

THE North Central Regional Health Authority is awaiting the findings of a report which it hopes would explain how a wounded man detained by police last Friday, could escape police guard on Tuesday morning. The escapee has been identified as Isaac Lovell of Five Rivers, Arouca.

Up to press time he remained at large. Reports are that at about 5.20 am, he managed to give a police constable the slip while under guard at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in Mt Hope.

The Authority’s CEO Davlin Thomas told Newsday the hospital itself is guarded by several security companies, including Amalgamated Security and Allied Security Services, and these companies will take action once an alarm is raised.

“But this is a hospital and not a prison. If we see someone leaving the hospital we would not make an attempt to intervene, unless an alarm is raised. If you are under police guard, one would expect a certain level of vigilance (from the police),” Thomas said.

For the moment, Thomas said, there would be no change in the way hospital security operates, but he is waiting for the report to see whether an alarm was raised so that security officers would be aware of the escape. “We are waiting on the final report to see how this could have happened,” Thomas said. “We would really like to know.”
