Man, 84, kills Tableland bandit

An elderly man shot and killed one of two armed bandits reportedly caught red-handed trying to steal a van at his family’s home at Tableland early Tuesday.

Up to Tuesday morning, the police did not identify the bandit, who is believed to have been in his 40s.

Police said at about 12.35 am, noise awakened the 84-year-old house owner and his adult son. They also heard the engine of the family’s Hyundai van idling. The father, a retired game warden, and his son saw two strangers wearing hoodies in the garage.

The father told police one of the bandits aimed a gun at him when he shouted for them to leave the property.

Fearful for his life, he took his licensed gun and shot at one. The injured man died and his accomplice ran off unhurt.

The family called Tableland police, who found a gun next to the body, as well as gloves, masks, and tools used to break into properties.
