Newsday donates school supplies to children’s homes

Daily News Ltd, through the Newsday Save the Children Fund, has donated $100,000 in school supplies to eight children's homes across the country.

Project officer Simone Walters-Rocke said the homes have children between the ages of five and 17. The homes received supplies such as printer paper, folder pages, notebooks and other stationery.

"Three of the homes were saying they were so grateful for the donations, especially the paper because they needed it to take care of the students," Walters-Rocke said.

Newsday's Save the Children Fund is a foundation charity initiative started by Newsday’s first editor in chief Therese Mills.

Originally it was called the Save the Street Children Fund.

"Legend has it, Mrs Mills had an issue with seeing all the children on the road while we were on Chacon Street. She wanted to take care of them, so she created the Save the Street Children account."

Five years ago, the fund was changed to Save the Children Fund because management, under then acting CEO Maria Cooper wanted to help more children and expanded it from street children. The fund helps children with medical issues and other needs."Essentially, we help children's homes through TT," Walters-Rocke said.

Newsday's Save the Children Fund is funded by public donations. Anyone willing to make a contribution can direct deposit to Save the Children's Fund's Republic Bank account number 180217678801.
