Sunday is World Tourism Day, celebrated annually on September 27.

This year marks the 40th anniversary since the United Nations (UN) in 1980, designated the date to promote global awareness of the social, cultural, political and economic importance of tourism.

This country is still closed to visitors because of measures put in place to deal with the coronavirus pandemic. Other countries in the Caribbean have started the process of reopening.

While Government has given no indication of when the borders will be reopened to commercial flights, the Prime Minister will review internal covid19 restrictions in October.

With tourist sites empty, Newsday photographers captured these images over the past few months of popular sites and attractions.

We're sharing them as the globe observes World Tourism Day. Here are some places to visit when the covid19 restrictions are lifted.
