MINISTER of National Security Stuart Young reacted to a recent UN Human Rights Council report which accused the Venezuelan Government of crimes against humanity by saying the Government supports human rights and a policy of non-interference in other States.

At Wednesday’s post-Cabinet briefing, Newsday asked about the report that said atrocities were committed in Venezuela to further State policy. Young replied, “We haven’t, at our level, had any conversation about the content of that report. I saw it being reported.

“One of the things that stood out when I was reading the international report is the report was written and persons were not in the country. So the UN investigators were not actually on the ground in Venezuela. That was a bit of an unusual event for me and I just leave that right there.”

He said the Government “will always have concerns if there are issues of human rights violations etcetera, but that is not for us.”

Young concluded, “Our international policy is non-interference and at that stage, we just continue to maintain that. Venezuela continues to be, I remind you, our seven mile neighbour and we are the closest country to Venezuela.”
