Police have launched a manhunt for a group of people who kidnapped the mother of a supermarket owner in Sangre Grande on Wednesday morning.

The victim, Mary Ali, was snatched from the car park of the George Street grocery shortly before 8 am.

The kidnappers bundled her into a grey Mitsubishi Lancer which sped off in the direction of Coalmine, according to an early police report.

She is the mother of Anil Ali, who owns the Cost Cutters chain of supermarkets. Investigators confirmed kidnappers had not yet demanded a ransom.

Members of the Special Operations Response Team, the Eastern Division Task Force, the Anti-Kidnapping Unit and the Cyber Crime Unit are involved in the case.
