A 27-year-old unemployed man who goes by the nickname "The Resistance" was charged with maliciously starting a fire at the Ministry of Health at the corner of Park and Edward Street, Port of Spain on August 8.

A CID investigation resulted in the arrest of one suspect who assisted police with their enquiries.

Further investigation led police to a house in Turquoise Drive, Diamond Vale, Diego Martin, on September 14, when the wanted man was arrested. He was charged with arson and was expected to appear before a Port of Spain magistrate on Thursday.

Reports said firefighters received a report around 1.30 pm of a fire in the basement of the CHIC Building, which houses the Ministry of Health.

A man was seen running away. When firefighters responded they saw a message on the wall saying "Covid-19 is all about the new world order. Stop is now #The Resistance."

In a release on Thursday, deputy commissioner of police McDonald Jacob said, "It appears that other aspects of anti-social sociopathic and extremist behavioural patterns are developing in TT.

"The TTPS will ensure that such behavioural patterns do not develop or gain route (sic) within our society. We have seen worldwide where such patterns of behaviour have caused destruction to property and injuries to innocent citizens.

"I wish to emphatically state that the police is fully equipped to deal with such occurrences and demand that individuals be dissuaded from attempting to adopt such negative trends in our society.”
