A former councillor at the San Fernando City Corporation has cleared the air regarding messages circulating on social media that the police detained him for being involved in illegal activities.

Anderson Williams, 30, ex-councillor for Les Efforts West /La Romaine, dismissed the issue as mischief. He acknowledged that police searched the family’s home and auto sales business at Gulf View in La Romaine on Wednesday.

"This is not the first time that someone has created mischief. I have never been arrested or was the centre of any police investigation. I have never been detained for questioning for anything in my life," he told Newsday on Thursday.

"It is disheartening to know that people would go out of their way to spread false information."

Speaking at his home, Williams recalled that at about 6 am on Wednesday, police from Port of Spain came to the house "on official duties". They showed a warrant to a relative, searched the compound and left. Williams, who is a director of AW Motors, did not share the search warrant's contents. By 8 am, police left without arresting anyone.

"Everything was found to be above board. The officers were very courteous and professional. They did not rough up anybody at all. They did their job and left. Business went on, as usual, yesterday (Wednesday)," Williams said.

"Whoever gave that information (of his alleged involvement in illegal activities) to police, I hope they found they find peace and purpose."

Williams served as a PNM councillor from 2016 to 2019. As a councillor and someone in politics, he "felt the brunt of propaganda".

"Something would happen, and people would add their own spin to it and exaggerate," Williams said.

As a businessman, he said he interacts with many customers regardless of political affiliations or class. Williams charged he is not involved in any illegal activities.

He vowed that the company serves the community with integrity and remains focused on providing excellent service.

"At the end of the day, we know what we are about, and we continue to serve the community. The business was established over 45 years ago."
