Damion Lester McEwen pleaded guilt before the virtual magistrates court in Scarborough to slapping a woman in the face and beating her with a broom handle and cutlass.

Mc Ewen, a 33-year-old labourer from Plymouth, appeared before magistrate Jo-Anne Connor on Monday. He was granted bail of $50,000 and will be sentenced on September 17.

He was charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm on the woman on September 4.

A police report said McEwen went to the woman's home on June 23 and they started to argue.

McEwen hit the woman several times across the face before using the broom handle and cutlass, which caused injuries and swelling to her face and body.

A report was made to the Scarborough Police Station and the Gender-Based Violence Unit investigated.

McEwen was arrested and charged.
