Siparia man charged with rape of pensioner

A 28-year-old Siparia man was denied bail and has been scheduled to reappear in court for the rape and kidnapping of a pensioner.

Alvin Sookram, a labourer from La Brea Trace, appeared before Magistrate Aden Stroude at the Siparia First Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

Reports said a 74-year-old woman was crossing the road at La Brea Trace junction around 10.30 pm on July 24 when two men bundled her into a vehicle.

She reported that she was taken further down La Brea Trace, behind the Siparia West Secondary School, where she was assaulted.

The victim said in an attempt to fight off the man, she was struck with a stone, which injured her foot, and also was hit several times in the back.

She said she was left in the bushy area and was unable to make her way out until daylight because she feared further for her safety and was unable to see.

Snr Supt John, Insp Simon, Sgt Ramsaran, acting Cpl Gokool and WPC Philandez, the Rio Claro CID, arrested the accused at Ecclesville, Rio Claro on Friday.

He is due to reappear in court on October 26.
