The Opposition Leader has congratulated and extended best wishes to the newly-appointed mayor of Chaguanas, Faaiq Mohammed.

A post on Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s Facebook page on Wednesday morning said the Chaguanas borough continues to produce many patriots, all of whom have given dedicated service to TT.

She also congratulated former mayor Vandana Mohit on her time of service at the corporation as well as on her new portfolio as the MP for Chaguanas East.

"The UNC will continue to ensure that the decision-making table is reflective of the diversity of TT and continues its mandate to empower young people as it is reflected by the leadership within the Parliament and now the Chaguanas Borough Corporation.

"We also wish to remind all citizens to follow all health guidelines set out by the World Health Organization and to obey and comply with all laws aimed at combatting the spread covid19 pandemic."

She called on citizens to be their brother's keeper and work together to overcome "this obstacle."

On Tuesday afternoon, Mohammed, the former deputy mayor, was sworn in at the corporation’s auditorium. Mohammed, 32, is also serving his third consecutive term as the councillor for Charlieville. He started off as an Independent Liberal Party member in the first term in 2013, and twice afterward as a UNC member.

After the ceremony, Mohammed told Newsday he was excited about his new position and emphasised he is a son of Chaguanas.

On Wednesday, he took to Facebook and thanked burgesses for their support.

He said, "I have lived here all my life. I am a product of this great borough, and I feel truly humbled and blessed to have the opportunity to serve as your mayor. I thank you for your support."
