CONGRESS of the People (COP) leader Carolyn Seepersad-Bachan on Sunday wished well to former party member Flora Singh upon being chosen as UNC candidate for Arima in the upcoming general election but was unhappy at how she left the COP.

Singh was in a group of five candidates announced by the UNC on Saturday. Singh had been elected councillor for the Arima West/O’Meara seat on Arima Borough Council for 2010-2013 within the term of the People’s Partnership government of 2010-2015.

Seepersad-Bachan told Newsday Singh resigned from the COP on Saturday at 10.30 am by way of a WhatsApp message. She said Singh had been chairman of the COP Women’s Arm until resigning a couple of weeks ago and by virtue of that position been a member of the national executive.

Newsday was unable to contact Singh.

UNC PRO Anita Haynes spoke to Newday on behalf of her party, but not on behalf of Singh.

“The political leader (Kamla Persad-Bissessar) said years ago when we decided to run in the election as the UNC alone, that all people interested in national development and who have the best interest of TT at heart, you are welcome to join the UNC.”

Haynes reckoned that message had resonated with Singh.

“We’ll continue to invite anyone to join us. If you agree with the UNC’s policies there is a space for you in national development.

“We put out our policies early to give people something to vote for, and that’s what people are doing now, by making an informed decision to join the UNC.”
