COUNCILLOR for Reform/Manahambre Chris Arshad Hosein has appealed toEducation Minister Anthony Garcia and minister in the ministry, Dr Lovell Francis "to do something good” for the children of Reform before they demit office.

Hosein recently led members of the school's Parents Teachers Association (PTA) in protest at the site of the unfinished Reform Hindu School.

He called on the two ministers to "begin work on the new school in your final days in office.”

Hosein and the parents walked through the abandoned and incomplete structure as well as through the Reform ECCE Centre, which has also been abandoned.

The ECCE centre has also been vandalised and overgrown with vines and bushes.

In an interview, Hosein said there is no space in the existing school for physical distancing as Garcia indicated would be the case when school reopens in September.

He said the school environment is uncomfortable and not conducive to learning.

“We are calling on Minister Garcia to do something good for a change before he demits office. Resume work on the new Reform Hindu School and do not allow your political agenda to affect the lives of these children.”

“This is nothing but blatant victimisation and wanton neglect this country has ever seen.

“We keep hearing about the importance of education and I believe it is so important for a government to invest in their citizens from a young age. That starts with better schools that can give our children a fighting chance in this world. Education is the ticket out of poverty. In TT, jobs and education will eradicate the need for jails and this government’s track record when it comes to education leaves much to be desired.”

PTA president Sheryl-Ann Ramdial also expressed concerns about the unacceptable conditions at the existing school and said the students have been suffering for far too long.

Hosein said he intends to continue the fight until students have a new and comfortable school building.
