Pensioner dies in fire

PENSIONER Cecil Andrews died in an early morning fire on Friday. A report stated that San Juan Fire firemen were called at 7.07 am about a fire at a house in Noreiga Lane, Laventille Road off Saddle Road, San Juan.

When firemen arrived they found the 64-year-old man who lived alone trapped inside the heavily burglar-proofed house. The firemen struggled to get into the house to try and rescue the elderly man and extinguish the blaze. They were also assisted by fire-fighters of the Wrightson Road and Woodbrook Fire stations.

In the end, their efforts proved in vain as Andrews was overcome by smoke. The house was almost destroyed by the flames. Andrews' body was later removed to the Forensic Science Centre in St James for an autopsy. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined and investigations are ongoing.
