TOBAGO secondary school teacher Rebecca Smith, 47, begged the court for forgiveness on Monday after pleading guilty to shoplifting at Coss Cutters Supermarket, Scarborough. Smith, who teaches agriculture, appeared before magistrate Dwayne Murray at the Scarborough magistrate virtual court charged for larceny of chicken nuggets, garlic sauce, butter and toothpaste.

The court heard that Smith went to the supermarket and was caught placing items in her bag before leaving without paying. A security officer on duty stopped and searched Smith’s bag and found the stolen items. Smith was later taken back to the supermarket but tried to run away. The security chased her and held her until police arrived.

Asked by Murray why she stole the items, Smith said she was tempted and it was a weakness on her part. She will reappear in court on July 6 for sentencing.
