Make dad the virtual centre of attention

Every year for Father’s Day, my uncle hosts lunch for all the dads in the family. It’s one of the highlights on our family calendar and all the dads love it. This year, we can’t be with our family in the same way, but with technology, our loved ones can still be in the room with us, even those living abroad. Online parties are becoming very popular, but it only works, if everyone participates.

Social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook have a “live” feature, that enables the host to record their surroundings and invite others to join their virtual venue. As the host, you’re responsible for being the life of the party.

Make sure the music is fun and lively, so your guests can enjoy it in their own homes. Decorate your space to make it more inviting. No one wants to see you sit in a chair for hours. Move around and make it interactive. Invite them into the kitchen while you’re cooking for dad, and spark conversation.

Zoom parties are also a great way to interact with the family. It has become more popular than social media for intimate family gatherings since it gives everyone more face time. Google Hangout and Skype are also options that don’t have the 40-minute time limit Zoom has. It also takes the pressure off one family to host the entire event and gives everyone the opportunity to contribute. When using these platforms, don’t forget to mute your microphone when others are talking and try using headphones if you’re in a busy room.

Everyone can decorate their homes and show off the meals they prepared for dad. Each family can take turns being the DJ for the night, so there isn’t too much background noise interference.

There are also virtual party games you can play. Virtual gaming sites like playingcards.io have a host of games you can play with the family, like crazy 8’s and go fish, while you interact with them on Zoom or Live. Simply send everyone the link to the game and they can join in.

If you’re not into virtual gaming, there are others like Heads Up, that you can play. Just get everyone to write names, animals, celebrities etc on pieces of paper to put on your forehead for everyone to guess. There are other classics, like charades that you can play in the same way. Everyone can write their items on paper, and take turns playing. You can even host a talent show, and get the children involved in preparing performances for their fathers.

Just like any party, it’s always a good idea to plan ahead. Assigning everyone with a role to play will help things move along quickly, and keep the focus on having a good time with each other. Dress up. This is still a celebration, even if it’s in your living room. Decide on a theme, so everyone is clear on the dress code, whether it’s formal dinner, costume or cocktail. Don’t forget the wine, to toast to our favourite guys. Cheers!
