Dennis 'saddened' by hardware owner's death

A Tobago businessman died on Sunday in a road accident at Plymouth Road, Scarborough.

According to police, around 11.25 am Curtis Phillips, the owner of TK Hardware, Bon Accord, was driving his Ford Ranger when Kurton Alleyne, 21, the driver of a Nissan Frontier picked up a skid and crashed head-on with him.

Phillips, also known as Labba, exited the vehicle bleeding and collapsed. He died at the scene. The District Medical Officer later pronounced Phillips dead and his body was moved to the Scarborough mortuary. Alleyne and two other occupants of his vehicle were taken to hospital with injuries.

Chief Secretary Ancil Dennis on Sunday extended condolences to Phillips' family'.

He said in a press release, "The island has been thrown into mourning...due to a fatal accident this morning involving a young businessman whose family has served the Tobago community in business for generations. I am indeed saddened."

He called on Tobagonians to rally around the Phillips' family in their time of grief as well as those of the two brothers killed on Friday night.

"Tobagonians are known for being a loving, caring and compassionate people. We must go back to the days when one cried, we all cried and when one was in pain, we all felt that pain. This a call for unprecedented empathy, unity and goodwill."

Country Control Fire Officer, Tobago division, David Thomas called on Tobagonians to be careful on the roadway.

Cpl Sebro of the traffic branch is continuing investigations.
