Revoke that $50M grant to hotels

THE EDITOR: I am asking the Government to revoke the $50 million grant intended for repairs and upgrading of hotels and guest houses. I think this should be offered when the Government has a very good idea when worldwide tourism will resume. I do not think we will see that resumption for the next three years or perhaps even longer.

It is my humble and respectful view that the grant would better serve the interest of the people of Tobago in several spheres of human endeavour and in particular the small business entrepreneurs who are in need of assistance at this time, not three years down the road.

I also think that with hurricane season expected to be above normal this year part of the $50 million should be used by way of grants to assist the most vulnerable whose homes are in need of repairs. Roads in villages which are in an awful state of disrepair should be attended too.

When these vulnerable homeowners find themselves in situations where their homes are damaged or destroyed they cannot go to the hotels association for assistance.

I am asking for the total revocation of the $50 million to the association with immediate effect. Put Tobago and Tobagonians first at this time.
