A week after her son Micah Payne was shot dead during a drive-by shooting, Nadine Payne is calling for help in finding a job to assist in supporting herself and her family in their time of grief.

Micah, 19, was shot and killed along with Lincoln Gobersingh at Foncette Road, Cascade, on Thursday night, last week.

Speaking with Newsday on Wednesday, the elder Payne said despite her efforts to secure a rental relief grant, she was facing eviction from her landlord as she had until Friday to pay outstanding rent.

This she said has caused her and her two children ages three and nine to live in separate areas with relatives.

Payne, 42, said she is now living with relatives Aranguez and is surviving off the goodwill of her relatives.

"I don't even have time to grieve the death of my son.

"My daughter is already dealing with the grief of her brother and she doesn't have anywhere to go. Even if someone calls me up to offer me a job I will have to ask someone to step in to look after them because both my brother and my sister work full-time jobs."

Newsday spoke to Payne's landlord Julia Diaz who confirmed said she was owed three months rent and told her that she had until Friday to pay the outstanding amount or be evicted.

"I gave her up to Friday to leave, she still has her things here. She is trying to get money from the government and hasn't been getting through so what she is saying is the social worker is calling and saying they interviewed her (Nadine) but I keep telling them that I have my life to live too, I have my bills too.

"Everyday you're hearing people aren't getting through but unfortunately she hasn't gotten through either."

Payne said she worked as a temporary clerk for the Ministry of Public Utilities from 2018 but was replaced after she was placed on leave last year.

Payne said she was not asking for a handout but was only looking for an opportunity to provide for herself and her two children who were devastated from the loss of Micah.

"I just want to get a job to get back on my foot. I always pay my rent on time but landlords just need to be a little more lenient with their renters.

"I'm a single parent I don't have money to afford a lawyer to contest these things in court so my children have to be moving from place to place. I don't know what to say, I'm still in grief for my son so there's a lot on my plate right now."

In the meantime Payne said she is trying to access whatever options available to her through the Ministry of Social Development for assistance while trying to organise her son's funeral. Anyone who wishes to help her can contact 471-3284.
