Morvant man dead after shootout with SORT

A man has died after a shootout with the Special Operations Response Team (SORT) in Morvant on Thursday morning.

Police said members of SORT went to a house at Redwood Street, Morvant, at around 6.30 am. They were shot at and returned fire.

During the shootout Nigel Mayers, aka “Dufu,” was hit several times. Police took him to the Port of Spain General Hospital, where they later said he died.

Police said the SORT team seized one assault rifle and some explosives in the area. They were still there up to 7.15 am, searching for more weapons.

The exercise was led by Snr Supt Phillip of the Northeastern Division, DCP Jayson Forde and Sgts Metivier and Mark Hernandez of SORT.
