Tabaquite PNM glad to have Seales

THE choice of retired police inspector Michael Seales as PNM prospective candidate for Tabaquite is a vote of confidence that the party can wrest the seat from the UNC, constituency chairman Curtis Shade told Newsday on Tuesday.

While Seales was not among the three nominees (Aaron Mohammed, Kevin Chan and Robert Vialva) screened last week for Tabaquite but was screened for Couva North, Shade expressed faith in the screening committee’s decision to shift him to Tabaquite.

“We have no problem with the party taking a decision if they feel a candidate is better here.”

He said the screening committee is made of politicians who have insights beyond that of constituency members.

“We are happy. We’ve been waiting for that type of candidate. That makes us feel the party thinks we can win Tabaquite," Shade said.

“He’s a lawyer, he’s high-profile. We are prepared to work with him. We are already planning to hit the ground hard. We believe we can win Tabaquite.”

Shade said support for the PNM in Tabaquite has been rising since 2015.

Newsday asked if Seales had connections with Tabaquite.

Shade replied that Seales was generally a well-known police officer and several other well-known officers were resident in the constituency.

“He has the support of people in the constituency.”

Asked if Seales had any family ties to the area, Shade said, “I think he has family in Tortuga. That’s what I’ve heard. Also, he is connected on the ground here. He is accepted.”

He said the PNM now has its largest ever campaign team standing ready in Tabaquite.

“We are pumped up to win. We will work beyond the call of duty.”
