Tourism Minister Randall Mitchell said it was always government's plan to bring home nationals stuck on cruise ships since the closure of the country’s border in March.

In a media release on Monday, he said the measures undertaken were due to the strict adherence to scientific data that allowed for zero positive covid19 cases as reported on May 22. A Ministry of Health update on Monday (May 25) stated the number remained unchanged.

Mitchell said, “It was always the intention of the government to repatriate crew members and applauded the fact that this action commenced immediately after the country became free of positive covid19 cases.”

He added that the adequate resources are now available to ensure care and treatment of the crew members as they undergo the mandatory 14-day state quarantine.

Mitchell said the ministry appreciated the work by nationals who are on cruise ships promoting the country as a tourist destination.

He said, “Thanks to the crew members for their patience and forbearance. The cruise ship industry is of great importance to the overall development of tourism and a source of lucrative employment to many nationals, who continue to promote the country and encourage visitors to come to our country.”

He also urged all nationals to continue observing the health protocols to mitigate against the spread of the virus.

On Saturday, six members from the music band Xcite who were on board the Caribbean Princess returned home and on Monday another group of 49 crew members who were on board the Disney Fantasy were expected to return home.
