UNC's Hunt sends Eid greetings

The UNC's candidate for St Joseph, Alhoy Hunt, has extended Eid greetings to the Muslim community.

In a statement, Hunt, who was selected as the party's candidate for the St Joseph constituency, said for Muslims, Eid ul-Fitr was a significant religious holiday on the Islamic calendar.

"It is a joyous occasion as well as a time for reflection on the spiritual journey undertaken during Ramadan.

"Over the past month, Muslims engaged in prayer, fasting, and in service to their communities. Many fulfilled their religious duty of Zakat, charity that is given for the care of the poor. These tenets of the Islamic faith of service, caring for those less fortunate, as well as personal sacrifice, discipline and generosity are values which we can all emulate. This year it was done in the context of a global pandemic, where we all had to adhere to strict lockdown measures," he said.

Hunt said it was "truly heartening to see the outpouring of support to those who were most vulnerable due to closures and job loss,"and commended the Muslim community, and all people who gave of themselves, whether it was their time, food, and all other necessities to those affected.

"In many cases, this was the only help they received in their time of need. We salute you!

"It is during times like these that the importance of working together in peace and harmony becomes evident, and even though we could not gather we found ways to still build our community," Hunt said.

He also prayed that the lessons learnt during the holy month are used to commit to creating a stronger TT.

Hunt started working in the constituency soon after it was announced he got the nod to contest the seat for the Opposition.

On Saturday, he distributed hampers and face masks to constituents.

Hunt served in the Regiment and is a Lieutenant Colonel. He is also the brother of former PNM minister Gary Hunt.
