A 44-year-old labourer is expected to appear before a Rio Claro magistrate on Thursday on charges of marijuana cultivation.

A release from the police service said Joel Davis was charged by acting Cpl Douglas of the Biche police station after 17 marijuana trees were found at his Charuma Village, Biche home.

The release said officers of several divisions, including the Eastern Division Task Force Area South, Manzanilla, Mayaro, and Rio Claro police stations, executed several raids on five houses in the Charuma Village on Friday.

The exercise was co-ordinated by Snr Supt Aguilal and supervised by Sgts Kistow and Bhim.

The release added that under the Dangerous Drugs (Amendment) Act, anyone with more than 30 grammes, but not more than 60 grammes, of cannabis; or more than five grammes, but not more than 10 grammes, of cannabis resin, commits an offence, and is liable on summary conviction to a fine of $50,000.

It also said on the growing of four plants, the law allows for an adult to cultivate, or have in their possession, not more than four growing female marijuana plants.
