Police are investigating a shooting incident in Belmont on Tuesday night which left a man dead and one of his attackers injured.

Investigators identified the dead man as 36-year-old Lawrence Charles but did not disclose the identity of the injured man.

Police said Clarke was in an area known as Beecham Coco, around 9 pm, when he was confronted by gunmen and shot several times.

During the incident, gunshots were fired at the attackers by someone close by.

Police on patrol were alerted and took both men to the Port of Spain General Hospital. Charles was declared dead on arrival while the wounded man was treated and remains warded under police guard.

Police subsequently intercepted a car near the St Ann's roundabout, which they suspect was linked to the shooting incident, and found one of the passengers with a gunshot injury to the left leg.
