UNC: Young must go

UNC PRO Anita Haynes said Minister of National Security Stuart Young must resign after US Ambassador Joseph Mondello said the two men had discussed the recent visit of Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez to TT.

Young, on Wednesday last week in the Senate, said Mondello did not cite a concern about a possible breach of the Rio Treaty when they spoke about Rodriguez’s “courtesy call to discuss covid19” when the minister and the ambassador met recently.

Mondello, in a statement on Wednesday, said he expressed concern about Rodriguez’s visit “with TT’s obligations to the Rio Treaty.”

He said Article 20 of the treaty “makes it unambiguously clear that all measures imposed by the Organ of Consultation – like the travel restrictions on Ms Rodriguez – are binding on all treaty parties, whether or not they voted in favor of such measures.”

Haynes said, “From the US Ambassador’s statement it is clear that Stuart Young is willing to cover up whatever happened in the meeting with Delcy Rodriguez.

“We call for his immediate resignation on the facts.”

She said the UNC will issue a full statement later.
