POLICE who went to the home of a retired policeman and his wife on Monday morning, came across a gruesome scene as both were found murdered.

Retired corporal Kenneth Makhan, 62, was found stuffed in a barrel while his wife Lillawati, 65 was found in suitcase in their Upper Welcome Road, Cunupia home. Police said they received a phone call from residents who complained of a foul stench coming from the couple’s house.

After forcing their way unto the premises, police found the bodies which were in an advanced stage of decomposition.

When Newsday visited the scene, a man who asked not to be identified said the area in which the couple lived is mostly populated by family members of the victims and everyone was left in a state of shock over the incident.

He said, “We thought they went to visit relatives because his mother died a few weeks ago. The last time we saw them alive was sometime last Thursday,” said the man who described Makhan as a loving and friendly person, who would often play music and hang out with his neighbours.

His wife was also described as a friendly person.

The man added that the couple had no children and were not involved in any dispute. He said, “I do not know of anyone who would want to harm them or who may have threatened them. They are good people.”

The bodies were later removed to the Forensic Science Centre in St James for autopsies. No motive has been established and no arrest made.
