Deal with waste before cutbacks

THE EDITOR: It is very unfortunate to learn of the proposed financial cutbacks at UWI, our premier tertiary institution. This was inevitable because lecturers are being paid to teach courses with few students.

For instance, in the Faculty of Humanities & Education lecturers are employed full-time to teach courses with less than ten students.

There are other areas of questionable expenditure. Recently, there was the launch of a book, The Slave Master of Trinidad. There was no justification for this because the author is neither part of the full-time or part-time academic staff at UWI. He is not even a graduate of UWI.

Maybe Sir Hilary Beckles and Education Minister Anthony Garcia could deal with these areas before they complain of cutbacks and lack of funding.
