It is not every day that you would see fire officers taking part in the ignition of a bush fire, but on Tuesday Morning they did just that.

Why? So they could assist the Ministry of Works and Transport prepare for the rainy season.

At about 10 am, commuters on Wrigtson Road had to contend with smoke from the fire which was ignited by workers for the ministry near the retention ponds at South Quay, Port of Spain.

Sources in the fire service confirmed they supervised the controlled burn of tall grass and bushes as the ministry prepared for possible flooding in the capital. Sources said although fire officers were there to ensure that the fire was contained, it spread and climbed up an electric pole nearby.

The fire was, however, contained and doused.
